Exploration of predictive models of tobacco use in Salvadoran adolescents

Determine the predictive factors of tobacco use in Salvadoran adolescents. The sample evaluated 2283 adolescents, of both genders, in ages between 11 and 17 years.
The instrument applied corresponded to the World Youth Smoking Survey conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of United States of America (CDC), in 2003.
The data were subjected to statistical analysis.
Thus, statistically significant predictors were selected to construct logistic regression models. It was demonstrated that there are demographic and social variables that predict tobacco consumption.
However, the importance of social factors, in particular, of attitudes towards the offer of tobacco consumption by peers, is highlighted.
This research provides inputs to the existing theory on tobacco consumption in adolescents and reports important data for new studies and for the formulation of public policies aimed at the prevention of tobacco consumption in adolescents.
