Abstract

Family remittances in El Salvador are a recent phenomenon whose importance has been increasing in recent years.
Approximately ten years ago, coinciding with the time when the international prices of our main export product collapsed: coffee.
They are the result of the peculiar migratory process that accompanies the evolution of the economy in the last two decades.
It is also considered that this migratory phenomenon abroad, especially to the United States, although it is part of a vast movement of Latin Americans to the country of hope, in our special case is motivated by two fundamental causes: the lack of employment opportunities and the enormous wage differential between El Salvador and the main destination country, in addition to the ten years of civil war that affected many rural populations, as well as the marginal areas of urban centers.
