Abstract

The Laboratory Biotechnology from UNAN-Managua through the recycling project of used vegetable oil, developed a strategy for environmental education, as well as the application of a methodology to obtain environmentally friendly innovative products such as cleaning soap and biodiesel from used vegetable oil. Due to the problems presented by the Nicaraguan water supply and sewage company (ENACAL) in the Wastewater Treatment Plant (PTAR) of the city of Managua for the large amounts of solid fat adhered to the grids in the first stage of the process of treatment impeding the operation, this project began by conducting awareness workshops on the use and management of used vegetable oil and the adverse effects caused by the environment and human health, the university community were the first to be aware. Subsequently, through a project submitted by the City Hall of Managua in coordination with the Biotechnology Laboratory and funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), awareness raising campaigns were extended to the food court owners of the Israel Lewites, Iván Montenegro and Roberto Huembes market, as well as members of the municipal mayor of Managua and students of the different institutions including secondary schools. Actually, the Biotechnology Laboratory trains 600 students annually in environmental issues, promoting recycling, as well as raising awareness among the general population through participation in congresses, workshops and fairs, also the main collection center for used vegetable oil and has the operating permit for the preparation of cleaning soap.
