S aureus and antimicrobial resistance in two hospitals in Tegucigalpa, 2011-2012

Abstract

Objective: To determine antibiotic resistance of S. aureus strains isolated in two hospitals from Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Materials and methods A cross sectional study was conducted in Hospital Escuela and Instituto Hondureño de Seguridad Social. Isolates of S. aureus were collected from laboratories at two hospitals within a period of five months. Samples were transported to Bacteriology Laboratory of Microbiology School, and analyzed for antibiotic susceptibility profiles using Kirby Bauer test according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). Methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) were further tested for Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) using E-test, and PBP2a production by passive latex agglutination test.

Data were analyzed using EPI-INFO 3.5.1 statistical software for Windows.

Results: 90 S.aureus isolates were obtained from Hospital Escuela and 106 from IHSS laboratories. Most strains were isolated from exudates, showing different antibiotic resistant profiles. None of the isolates exhibit resistance to vancomicina. Oxacillin resistance (MRSA strains) was 14.3 % (Ci95 %=9.7 -20), and was confirmed by Kirby Bauer, E_test and PBP2 tests.

Conclusions: compared to other countries data, we found a very low MRSA prevalence and absence of vancomicin resistance in our study.
