Diversity and abundance of excavating sponges of Los Cóbanos Complex Protected Natural Area, El Salvador

Excavating sponges are responsible for most of the internal bioerosion in the reef matrix, causing important effects on its morphology and ecology; it is also a natural process that transforms the calcareous substrate into sediment and dissolved carbonate, altering the carbon cycle. The objective was to know the diversity and abundance of piercing sponges in the Los Cóbanos reef. In two beaches of the site, three horizontal transects perpendicular to the coast (30 m-long.) Separated by 10 m were used, collecting calcareous material that was later broken into small pieces looking for excavating sponges. The richness was grouped into six species (Cliona microstrongylata, C. pocillopora, C. vermifera, Cliothosa tylostrongylata, Siphonodictyon crypticum, Thoosa calpulli), being new records for the country, with greater abundance in calcareous debris. It is necessary to
allocate more research efforts in this group to know its richness and how these species can modify the rocky and coral reef of our country
